@jwcph I have no plans to switch away from macOS and Windows, even though I am right now typing this on an old MacBook running Linux Mint Debian Edition. Linux is great for all my personal communications and data storage needs, but the professional creative apps just aren't there, and neither are the proprietary control apps for various pieces of music gear, like my Boss GT-1000Core multifx/modeler.
When anything on Linux is as good as Logic Pro, maybe I'll switch my production workflow.
@gcvsa I'm definitely getting the same impression
if I were to switch over with my other Mac, too, then I would need things like Davinci Resolve & the Affinity suite to run on Linux & nothing I'm seeing during this process tells me that will be any easier - this despite the fact that Davinci does come for Linux; no reason to believe that means it will also run smoothly, or even at all... "Just switch to Linux" is, quite frankly, bullshit; almost nobody can "just" do it.

Upon further research it seems matters are even worse than I thought
I feel pretty confident saying that so far, almost no guitarists use #Linux & every single one who does is some kind of djent/heavy player...Either that, or it's a lot easier to make an amp plugin for some heavily driven & distorted sound than making one that actually sounds like a good amp.
Possibly a little of both.
@jwcph I don’t use Linux for music and I suspect you’re right it’s much harder and more limited. But I believe there is a NAM plugin for Linux and with that you can get good guitar tones. At least a quick web search suggests there are people doing this.

@optilude If you mean Neural Amp Modeler, then yes, but that's a laboratory tool, not an amp. I looked at it when I was searching for good amp plugins & decided that I don't want to learn how to model amps & cabs, or how/where to acquire various types of files to stack together to create a tone
I don't care what an IR or profile or whatever is, or how it works - I just want an amp to plug my guitar into, that works like a regular amp. -

But with a good capture it can sound great and if you are mostly after a small set of base sounds it can be worth it. I use it on my iPad (via the NAM XT plugin and AUM) as part of a travel guitar rig. I tried the captures in this post and settled on a few favourites: https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/i-tried-every-nam-profile-on-tonehunt-to-find-the-best-so-you-dont-have-to.2617388/

@jwcph honestly I don’t disagree with you by the way. But I feel the same about anything inside a computer these days. For enjoyment of playing I use an analogue amp via a UA Ox Box (since I can’t play loud) and analogue pedals.

@optilude Nice! 🤩 I have a little analog setup, too (it's a bit messy & ad-hoc & I do intend to work on a bit more...) - but I've also taken a liking to playing #BedroomProducer & all the possibilities of digital recording etc. & I want to keep doing that

You make a good case for NAM, though, maybe I'll have another go - thank you

@optilude Welp, I'm about half-way through installing NAM, which has so far taken me several hours & I don't exactly know where to go next - seems like on top of actually having to build both the plugin & the GUI add-on with Terminal (with no idea what I'm doing) I also have to go find some kind of IR loader, because that isn't included in the plugin... that's going to have to wait, I'm knackered.
Dear Lord, the word "cumbersome" doesn't fucking BEGIN! do describe this

@jwcph that does sound unreasonably painful. Maybe buy a Mac

@optilude I'm doing all of this on a Macbook Pro 2012
as you can probably imagine, I am feeling the day nearing when it just won't run anything anymore because the OS is too old & I'd like to get out from under the thumb of Big Tech
️...Honestly, though, Linux is not ready. Right now this exercise represents hope for the future, rather than preparation for a switch happening now or soon

@optilude - but as far as I understand, NAM runs on Mac, too, I'll probably have a go there as well at some point
