@jwildeboer I'm happy with the result but really disappointed with some emigrant communities. Ventura got an overwhelming majority among Portuguese emigrants in countries like Switzerland (71%) and France (64%), and the "we are better than Nepalese immigrants in Portugal" and "we somehow got it harder despite other European countries rolling a red carpet for us" speeches make my blood boil.

As we've seen in France, being on the second turn ballot is the real victory.

To my US friends: „Center-left“ in US political terms means „extreme socialist, almost communist“ #SarcasmButOnlyHalf
To the „yes, but“ group and other reply-guys: prepare for being ignored by me, this is good news. After the results of the Dutch parliament elections this is another clear signal that far-right can be contained.
(„Being ignored“ can also mean that I will block you if your „yes, but“ only serves to inject negativity because you don’t want people to feel good

@jwildeboer I’m all the more surprised because it’s Portugal. Maybe my sample of Portuguese impressions is very skewed, but I was convinced it was going to go the other way for them

@flying_saucers @jwildeboer I was positively surprised by the first round. I always expected the initial favourite Gouveia e Melo to tank once the campaign started, but I thought media favourite Marques Mendes would get to the second round easily, since he had been preparing the public narrative for 10 years now. Ventura was always going to lose the 2nd round. He has a dedicated cult around him that always show up, but has a massive rejection rate in the rest of the population.

@jwildeboer (and Seguro is a lot more center than left)

@Catarina But he is standing firm on the fundament of democracy. Good.
-
@jwildeboer if I am french, is that guy center left or right wing ?
@mhz He is the right wing of the center left, at least more left than the right wing PM (I live in Portugal). @jwildeboer

@jwildeboer yeah, Seguro was the lesser evil on the ballot. I and many others voted for him not because we agree or believe his policies, but because we had to keep Ventura out.

Obrigado, caro português! -

@teclista @mhz @jwildeboer we french people have experience with the right wing of the left, and I think that the portuguese are in for an interesting ride if they think this guy will apply a left-leaning program...

Still scary. With that amount of people willing to vote for him, he can be PM as soon as in the next elections

@jwildeboer I am once again reminded of what I said after the Canadian and Australian elections, the far right loses in any system not completely rigged in their favour

@Catarina @jwildeboer I voted for him more enthusiastically than I was expecting. Despite being a centrist, he still is a progressive and I am hoping he will set up clear guardrails with regards to what the political discussion should be about and how democratic political parties should seek an understanding on some of the pressing issues. Not super optimistic about that last one, but one can always hope. Seems like an upgrade with regards to his predecessor, at least.

@jwildeboer Still 1/3rd vote for this fascist. Same guy that says we need 3 more Salazares. These people voting for him must celebrate the 25th of April just to go to the beach.

@Catarina @jwildeboer worth noting that the current job holder is a social conservative with very thin progressive coating. People don't completely hate him only because he's a good sport and manages to maintain an aura of pope-like infallibility, which works quite well in a country which is still 100% culturally catholic.
