If you wonder how the initial spread of misinformation works...

Step 1: someone casually mentions an untruth inside a package of otherwise interesting and believable information.

Step 2: a couple 100 people share that.

Future step 3: others remember this and eventually retell their own version

    Anyway: oops and sorry.

      >Now here's a fun thing many people don't know about #Holland.

The Netherlands. "Holland" sounds more casual.

      >Due to the ever rising popularity of #cycling,

Cars sales & use are rising faster than bicycle use. That said. Bicycle use is slowly increasing among some groups & areas.

      >gas stations all over the country have been converted into bicycle repair and rental shops.

      Are they? I dunno.

      >Here's the one in Hoevelaken.

That one indeed is. There's a gas station across the street though.

@EvilCartyen Apparently so. Admittedly I do have a rather low capacity for predicting whether people are going to trust me or laugh with me.

This was something I was hyper aware about when working as an industrial safety trainer. Bit less so when posting on the internet..

@Pepijn I think a lot of it's cultural. Some cultures, Danes and Dutch people included, just like to tell tall tales and be ironic, and certain other cultures just don't pick up on it.

I have a friend who married a Spanish lady, and the first time I met her she asked me if I knew when he was kidding because she could never tell. Admittedly he's a very very talented liar and inventor of stories, but I don't think it's that uncommon for people from this side of the woods.

@Pepijn @EvilCartyen We were once stopped by a couple of tourists in Amsterdam. They asked us what the building behind us was and he very seriously answered “that’s the royal palace”. They completely believed him and I had to run after them to tell them it was the Central Train Station.

@Pepijn @EvilCartyen He is ridiculously good at making people believe any BS he can think of, and all I can do is stand next to him and gesture like a madwoman “HE IS LYING TO YOU”

@juliette @Pepijn yeah, but it's fun though. My kids have figured out they can always call one of my sisters and ask because she's incapable of lying. I think you should get disability benefits when you suffer from that.
