I met some of these guys in the wild almost 20 years ago - this stuff isn't new, just more mainstream. Lonely boys and men, especially young ones get sucked in & believe it - it's sad. They're just looking for community and people with similar struggles. Often they have experienced a lot of social rejection as kids.

As far as I can fathom, it's a social media myth. Any differences between genders are slight either way, or non-existent as far as I've seen. The biggest differences seem to be between age groups, with older people generally being less lonely.
