I expect their primary purpose is to persist, something we all strive to do. But they also colonize rock outcrops, contributing to biochemical weathering and, eventually, soil development.</p><p>I suspect they may also be an important source of nectar and/or water for pollinators. Their up-turned flowers are often full to the brim with liquid.
