The stems are only 1-3cm tall. The little flowers look robust, but I've learned they only last a few days in the short northern summer.

I saw an ant exploring one of these yesterday. There are bumblebees around, and flies are one the most important pollinator groups in the area.

I expect their primary purpose is to persist, something we all strive to do. But they also colonize rock outcrops, contributing to biochemical weathering and, eventually, soil development.

I suspect they may also be an important source of nectar and/or water for pollinators. Their up-turned flowers are often full to the brim with liquid. For small flies this might be a more accessible place to drink than ponds and streams.
