It’s just bizarre. I’ve never had to think about the trash anywhere else I’ve lived. It just works, usually. Then in SF the horrible trash monopoly that we pay a ton of money to, also doesn’t seem to remember it’s their job to pick up the trash. Public services are so utterly broken.

I mean, pretty much all of California tax policy is built to keep cities like Oakland in a perpetual budget crisis. And the two flavors of solution for this problem--ramp up enforcement or commit to constant cleanups--involve a lot of staffing up.

It doesn't help that building contractors and apartment cleaning service across the east bay bring their trash here instead of paying landfill fees.

Garbage got picked up, I could put anything out on the curb, and it was a city service provided by unionized employees. There was no garbage collection fee. In SF, I’m constantly being told by that if we don’t fold our cardboard just right, or if the trash is “too big,” Recology will get mad and won’t pick it up anything. Are they aware they’re paid to collect literal garbage? I’ve seen our building’s bill: it’s nearly $1,000 a month for 7 units.

But I do know it could be worse.

I was once hired to visualize the chaotic system of commercial (non-residential) trash pick up in New York City.

There are a lot of dumb things about San Francisco, but its legislatively protected trash collection is near the top.

Don’t know the reason/project behind the sudden change, but it’s pretty dramatic.

But yeah, the phenomenon of grandmas and their friends cleaning up the outdoors after everyone is - um - sweeping the nation. And it is for the reasons you wrote. 🤦‍♂️

They had been fully functional, and not too ugly, and needed to be emptied more frequently. So they removed them. Ugh!

Someone organized to address a failing of the system, but rather than take a harder look at the failing system, we’re just supposed to applaud the person who temporarily alleviated the issue.
