There was a vein of the New World vs the Old bias. During a one year period, however, about 300,000+ Southern and Eastern Europeans (particularly Polish immigrants) evaded quotas by crossing thru Canada and Mexico. By 1925 both those borders were tightened.

About 25 minutes before it ends, the documentary discusses how the Chinese Exclusion Act preceded legislation in 1917 and 1924 that excluded many MORE people ā€“ including basically all Asians (not just Chinese) and those of Eastern and Southern European descent.

There were also immigration caps and quotas for specific groups of people. Immigrants from certain nations (like Great Britain) were seen as more "desirable" than others.

It is well worth watching. And I agree 110% that Americans must know this history.
