Best case, modern journalists simply don't know when to - and, crucially, NOT to - hedge & thus they hedge anything, which contributes massively to the idea that everything is relative, up for interpretation, unknowable.

This basically turns the world into one big grey area, in which bad faith actors feel so comfortably at home, putting us all at the mercy of such assholes.

Worst case, this is deliberate.
