The username has to be all one word without any spaces. However, your profile's display name (which is what most people see) can be edited to be a normal looking name with spaces.

It's a bit like email addresses, you have the address itself and then there's the name that appears at the top of an email.

When you pick a user name, I believe the software shows you what your complete fediverse address will be — so for example mine is [at] richardgrant [at] mastodon [dot] social, though only part of that is the user name that I chose. So in that respect, I guess mastodon does impose a certain format, and it's a function of how the fediverse works as a network of separate, distributed servers.

It could be boring but firstname_lastname tends to work well unless they have an ultra common name.
