1. so again, closed source except the google controlled part.

2. these three parts are not equal. google controlling the engine gives them a lot of control over the implementation of web standards -- and not least, as we've seen with the manifest v2 deprecation, over what kind of browser extensions are viable.

It wouldn’t be a “sovereign EU-browser”, but a “browser that makes the EU (the entity) sovereign”—and the EU, like any state, must be separated from the people it supposedly represents. Chat control, ageverification, the rush towards the AI-future, etc., these are things the EU is susceptible to. There’s nothing to say that an EU-owned Firefox would be much better *for its users*.
