15 years after the original reporting of https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/issues/64, the ability to route through areas like squares, plazas and other open spaces (rather than around their perimeter) has been implemented via https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/pull/7161! 🎉

Congrats @osrm for the momentous occasion! Pedestrian routing in the ecosystem was already leaps and bounds ahead of Google Maps, and now it's even better! 🙏🙌

It was a feature that didn't exist and so yes it is indeed a new feature, but the lack of it was certainly an issue (getting routed around an area rather than through it doesn't seem desirable in any way). Am I missing something? 🤔

It wasn't an "issue" to start with (if you take what is currently considered base functionality as a start), it's a new feature.

It is going to be a very long path before similar functionality is available in any appreciable number of routers, particularly on mobile. It isn't even clear what the best implementation strategy will be for mobile (pre-compute vs on the fly).
