It was wrecked in a winding tributary of the Rhine around the year 190 AD, possibly due to navigational error. Much of the barge's interior and the captain's personal belongings were preserved in the cabin, including a collection of tools. It allows an extraordinary glimpse into life aboard a vessel.

On display at Castellum Hoge Woerd, The Netherlands

me

#archaeology #RomanArchaeology

Reply to An absolutely fantastic #Roman barge, "De Meern 1", lenght 25m. on Sun, 06 Sep 2026 08:52:31 GMT

@davoloid @ninawillburger There's a very nice video about the preservation: https://youtu.be/PtEfKB8w9YY?si=EOwx3t7oxoupk1D_

The audio in only available in Dutch, but the pronuciation is so clear that I (native German speaker) could understand almost everthing despite not knowing Dutch.

And yes, they also used PEG for this one.

lenaschimmel@chaos.social

Reply to An absolutely fantastic #Roman barge, "De Meern 1", lenght 25m. on Sun, 06 Sep 2026 08:46:01 GMT

@davoloid @ninawillburger it only looks dry, it has been bathing for ages in the same stuff as the one you posted!

archeokluit@mastodon.chasalin.nl

Reply to An absolutely fantastic #Roman barge, "De Meern 1", lenght 25m. on Sun, 06 Sep 2026 08:24:35 GMT

@ninawillburger Wondering how they've preserved it, looks very dry.
