He dedicated his life to studying impact craters and co-discovered comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter in '94. He died in a car accident while crater hunting. As a tribute, NASA placed his ashes aboard the Lunar Prospector, which intentionally crashed into the Moon's south pole — making him the only human ever buried on the Moon.
