BTW I never said: All this came about because the computer suddenly refused to recognize the charger & since the battery is long dead, would no longer boot unless I used a different one. Happy to report that removing the broken Linux partition actually fixed this - though I have no idea why, the instinct was apparently correct.

Oh, I also managed to remove GNU Grub so I don't have to select boot drive every time.

Almost feels like I'm in control of my computer thingies.
