The couple times I've tried, it appears to convert supported audio formats to 128k mp3, so I started preconverting them before upload.
What I'd really like is native opus support. You should get better quality at a smaller file size, but if I upload a 64k opus, it'll be converted to 128k mp3, and that doesn't help anyone.
Am I in error anywhere?

I had a quick look at the Mastodon Github issues about this, and as far as I can tell MP3 conversion happens due to browser compatibility?
MP3 seems to work pretty much everywhere but some browsers have (or had) problems playing Opus in websites. I'm not sure if this is the case any more though, as shown by the discussions in these issues.
