Depending on computer frustration tolerance you may be better off sending a kvm pre-bound to tailscale and then shipping it to install os remotely...

I've just installed Linux on an old Windows box just to see what the process was like, and there was a fair amount of messing around with the boot settings in the BIOS that a non-techie might find difficult (I didn't understand it all myself, so to some extent I was just changing plausible looking things not quite at random until it worked). And I've decided to have a rest before trying to understand the Wine (or somesuch) installation instructions in order to get the couple of Windows applications I need up and running.
