For example, my new Motorola phone includes a super zoom feature that actually uses generative AI to fill in details as it crops in! I turned it off, but others might not notice and upload such digitally created images to iNaturalist, where they'd actually impact scientific research

Are these "AI enhanced" images going to have EXIF data attached to indicate it has these artificial features have been included? Lots of services that support photo upload strip EXIF data but maybe scientific research could take a peak first so it knows which ones to leave out...

Now that kind of editing has become part of the photographer's moment since that's how it comes out of the "camera" and there's no subsequent step and software involved. What you get is what it is, and it's all posing as photography.
