it’s extremely easy to use conference attendance for astroturfing. suddenly you’ve got all these names you’ve never seen before demanding you move in a particular direction. now you’ve got to prove that all these people are here in bad faith. but how could they be? they attended one specific talk at your conference because they smelled blood and money in the water. who are you to tell them they aren’t part of KDE?

believe it or not, running the conference means you get to exclude people who you decide don’t represent your project!

it’s literally not illegal to do that, and in fact it’s your responsibility if you’re going to do the job of running a conference

these are fringe voices now, and they’re very clearly angling at not being fringe voices for long

why allow people who aren’t core community members to give a talk on a subject which, if you’re right, they’re utterly unequipped to evaluate? if this isn’t a realistic direction for KDE to go in, why entertain it at all?

I’ve no idea why KDE would even entertain such nonsense at their own *official* conference, and it actively harms the project and brand.

Sometimes there aren’t two sides to an issue, this is one of those times.

If they want software they can talk to and befriend, in lieu of people, sure, no judgement. Go make it.

Maybe though, the desktop environment isn’t the platform for it… that’s kind of a major pivot. And KDE is associated with it. After all they must have accepted the RFP and thought “yeah, great idea, crack on”.
