HAM radio doesn't allow to transmit any kind of commercial traffic (that includes things like browsing the website of the independent book store next town over), and you musn't encrypt traffic.

So it's no bueno for regular internet.

My suggestion: Run/bury fiber to your neighbors. Fiber is dirt cheap (you can get a 50km spool of bare fiber for ~1k€). The most expensive part are the splicers, and you can get those for under 1k€. Maybe form an "internet cooperative"?

Is there a way out of this mess?

I am in rural Norway so systems relaying between Wifi routers simply won't work.

I am stuck with fibre or 4G controlled by companies albeit with a choice of ISPs.

Get a radio ham licence and set up IP over ham radio?

As far as I'm concerned, if connecting to a centralized ISP I want the link to talk plain Ethernet (and no funny encapsulation nonsense like PPPoE or similar BS) and simply have a DHCPv4 and v6-radvd on the other end and otherwise just forward IP packets.

The configuration for the router was managed centrally at the ISP and I needed to log into "MinSide" to check anything.

So when our internet connection went down I could not check the router configs or status at all. Even though I was sitting right next to the bloody router and connected to it via an ethernet cable

I replaced the ISP's router with my own shortly after I discovered that.

Stuffed through every orifice and then some.

The frustrating thing is, that people like me went around advocating for truly decentralized net infrastructure for decades.

Nothing, absolutely nothing about IP requires connection to centralized ISPs. Even the most basic el-cheapo-routers bring everthing to mesh them. Put one of those things into every basement and peer with your neighbors.

But try to convince people to do this: "… nahhh – this is too complicated."

The Royal Mail under Elizabeth 1 was, I think, not just read in the Post Office, but understood to be so, and to reduce the suspicion about communications, if they went through it.

The UKCrypto discussion list sed to be fascinating, when Crypto meant cryptology and -ography and not some scam involving large numbers of fungible promises between unreliable people.

My parent had originally registered the Skype account with the @googlemail.com version of their email address.

This as gmail.com was not universally used at the time the account was created.

However, MS account recovery systems refused to accept that their email address with @gmail.com was the same email address as the version @googlemail.com.

If you checked my profile you'll see Canada's own government comms laboratory were making use of code I wrote in the late 2000s at one point; I only found out about that early this year. Canada's got large rural and arctic areas of course, hence the obvious interest in ad-hoc networking in such places, as well as the usual tactical military apps; it was a US defense contractor who funded me to do that work in the first place.

So yes, the sovereignty issue has been playing out in the Internet engineering community for years; ongoing issues with cross-border hairpinning at key fibre interconnection points like Toronto and Vancouver. There's good published work on it, but I've barely skimmed it for years, it was a constant bone of contention for some of the EFnet #unix denizens.

I'm currently quite dependent on the payment systems you mention. PayPal isn't a viable alternative; that's another Article 17 story in of itself. Yes, I'm very concerned about this. In the UK we have BACS/Faster Payments for direct transfers, but the retail banks signed up to BACS and the others to CHAPS are all generally exposed to Microsoft in some way in their supply chains. Revolut? Google-pilled garbage, and they won't let you go even if you abandon them. But payment cards? Very tricky, Switch/Solo are no more. Even the ATM cash withdrawal systems have converged on Visa/Mastercard payment network snow. Some used to be independent, some still are. Canada's got some independence there with Interac but not much.

The USA currently seems to be all about "Extraterritorial jurisdiction for me, but not for thee", although that has in fact been going on for years, and Rubio pursuing the Italians just makes it that much more public. Or what happened with the DVD DeCSS author at DEF-CON in the 00s. It would represent some pushback on OFCOM's dubious efforts to pursue Online Safety Act violations overseas, but of course that was just silly to begin with.
