I think most of us would call it bracketed exposures.

Sensors have wide dynamic ranges, but we use our retinas in a similar way on, eg, a landscape in sunset,shading our eyes in order to see the landscape, and assembling the experience from the different exposures.

Composite implies something else, artistic rather than technical.

At just 11 km across and orbiting 5,989 km above Mars, Phobos does not fully occlude the disk of the Sun.

This image was acquired on Aug. 13, 2026 at the local mean solar time of 10:13:50 by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover.

He explains a bit on his Instagram post how he took this image. It is a composite of multiple images taken at different exposure levels during the eclipse. The moon image is probably very highly overexposed.

So, I think this is real.
