This whole thread is a good explainer for people who still wrongly think Bluesky is a resilient/user-run/federated network like Mastodon is.

The reality is that Bluesky requires infinite VC money to fully replicate, whereas Mastodon can run totally self-sufficiently on a Raspberry Pi.

It is still running gotosocial, tuwunel, and sesrxng though πŸ™‚

It worked fine, except it would lose wifi every so often and go offline, which was enough to encourage me move it to the main server. It worked happily for over a year though.

Whereas if mastodon.social went down I would not need to care in the slightest.

Wafrn servers werent affected by the outage and other people using alternative apps were able to use atproto. Hell i was talking with a bunch of them during the day of the event.

Imagine your main instance being down and then being able to post to your followers by just opening another app

But yeah, many fediverse servers can run on rpi easily (gotosocial comes to mind).
