Economic war is war. The “acts of war” started with America reneging on the deal that was already in place, that orange TACO negotiated in the first place. Canada needs to see these “negotiations” for what they are – an attempt to weaken us so that we can be swallowed up easier later. In my opinion Canada is much better served by facing the challenge head-on. Carney absolutely did the right thing. (1/2)

Then again, it would pretty much be an open declaration of economic war.

That said again, Trump has pretty much made that declaration already. Now it's just seeing who will back down on what to keep the status quo as long as possible beforehand.

Arguably the US is hurt by their current respect for the IP system, even the big multinationals. https://www.iprdaily.com/article/index/18262.html is an example showing h.266 is majority owned by patents of China companies.
The US backing out of TPP left many IP protection laws as needing to be done bilaterally, and I’m not sure how much has been done since CPTPP excluded them.

While everything is possible, I think our government should respond and expect what is likely. Yes, Americans and the opposition government haven't really reacted aggressively to Trump's more moronic policies or statements (like invading Greenland) but even Trump's puppets know they can't go too far. Any extreme policy the U.S. implements in retaliation is likely to trigger a more vocal or violent civil disobedience, which Republicans will want to avoid.
