However, I believe all the democrats and quite a lot of the republicans are still sane enough to not want to leave NATO. It will lead to losses in the U.S. weapons industry, and they will lose access to overseas bases. I think it's fully possible that there are forces affecting the US foreign policy agenda without a systemic analysis of their actions. One example of this might be US America First style policies that disrupt key aspects of the US ability to project power. Leaving Nato might be one such policy. At the very least, there's contradictory forces within the administration on that issue. Driving forces: That the US has lost every war they've started since Vietnam. The last 50 years has been a slow decline of American hegemony and thus war is less effective for the US to assert itself.
