A question:

Sometimes I look up an account that I haven't heard from in a while, and the account is there but all the posts are gone.

Is this something that happens if they are inactive for some time? if so, how long before posts just disappear?

Yup, this seems the most likely explanation if the account hasn't been active in a while. Some people prefer to have their posts automatically delete after a certain time period.

On this Sharkey instance, I just go to the top, and there's a clear thing that says it's a remote account, and a link to the account.

Because there is a friend who has been away for a while, and I was getting worried if her account would be intact when she eventually comes back.

I feel better about that now (but am still worried about her).

It's always worth it to go to the instance itself to see if that's what's happening there as well.

Often my "follow requests" from unknown people show up with nothing or next to nothing in terms of posts. I'm finding that's rarely a reflection of what's on the instance itself.

Or they might have actively deleted their posts.

Each account can set their own auto-deletion criteria. The person who posts can set a length of time after which they will disappear. You can also set criteria like "only delete if it had less than 2 boosts".

I'm not sure if servers can set defaults for that.
