I’m excited about it having big, open flowers (means it can cross-pollinate and continue to adapt to my climate and way of growing), has potato leaves (which means I can identify crosses if they get normal leaves), beautiful color and very good flavor. I’ve looked through the named tomatoes I have in my gene pool but can’t find a match.

Take part in the discussion over at GTS if you like: https://goingtoseed.discourse.group/t/2026-grow-reports-tomato-solanum-lycopersicum-and-a-wild-tomato-solanum-penellii/4586/141?u=malterod

Reply to Any #tomato geeks out there who can reckognize this as a variety? on Mon, 24 Aug 2026 13:32:03 GMT

Mystery solved. The fruit is Brad's Atomic Grape. And the reason why it had potato leaves and large flowers is ... it came from a neighbouring plant. They had tangled up in each other I mistakenly thought it was a cross. My main criteria is tomato that can produce fruit in open field with no staking, including good disease resistance. I basically want a field tomato with little maintenance that can freely interbreed and thus gradually adapt to my location. I'm in a normally very humid summer climate, so late blight is huge thing, but this is all changing too potentially - this year we've had record little rain the last 9 months, so late blight is less of a problem for me this season.

malte@radikal.social

Reply to Any #tomato geeks out there who can reckognize this as a variety? on Fri, 21 Aug 2026 18:03:13 GMT

@malte Ania? https://www.kleverhof.de/Saatgut/Tomaten-Bio-Saatgut-Tomatenvielfalt-Demeter/Tomaten-mehrfarbig-gestreift/899/Tomatensaatgut-Ania-kleine-Fruechte

exil_inselette@norden.social

Reply to Any #tomato geeks out there who can reckognize this as a variety? on Fri, 21 Aug 2026 18:01:09 GMT

Actually, even it does terrible in open field, it has all the other criteria I'm looking for in a good tomato. The test will be how well it does in open field without any staking, which is how I want to grow all my other tomatoes. This year, it had the benefit of growing in a sheltered spot in the city. If it grows well outside, I'm pretty sure it has the potential to become the mother for many new tomatoes.

malte@radikal.social
