Yes, but the FediGroups.social provider (which is currently the main provider of these kinds of groups) also has moderation tools for screening posts and members, and options for hiding discussions etc.

The main advantage Groups have over hashtags is that they federate much more effectively. Every post in a group is federated to everyone who follows that group, no matter which server on.

You can use hashtags and groups simultaneously by including both relevant tags and a relevant group mention in the same post, which lets you get the best of both worlds.
