Would empathy be generated more often?”</p><p>I’m not that optimistic it would improve the general tenor online directly, but a lot more insults and flame wars would die out almost immediately due to mutual illegibility. </p><p>On the broader subject, I got a refurb’d reMarkable tablet from Woot earlier this year, and I use it just for handwriting notes for work. And it’s been way more useful than I ever expected. Expensive luxury, yes absolutely. Experience is important: it includes knowledge not available through words and symbols, and matches the learning needs and potentials of young children. Tools are essential from the very start. Not those horrid electronic tablets, though. Those are all about replacing experience with a thin simulacrum, about fooling us into thinking that we've experienced something when, in fact, all we've had is the cognitive–sensory equivalent of crappy (yet incredibly satisfying) fast food.</p><p>I've been fighting with my son's teachers (and indeed my son) about this since the beginning. He's 16 now and has come to realise that I was right all along, and has largely abandoned the digital stuff where he can in favour of handwriting.
