(I've not seen the paper or anything, just seen/heard it reported on a few times.)

It was that some were so staggeringly wrong, and some were right, and unconsciously it started to erode my motivation to find a definitive answer completely.

I got over it a day later, but it slithers into your critical thinking space and fucks with it very badly.
