Me: "You all comfy?"
Groggily, almost asleep: "Not really, pull the covers down, my feet are sticking out."
Me, arranging the duvet, in a low soft comforting lullaby drone: "Yeah, I'll fix it. Nothing sticking out, all snug. You afraid a monster under the bed is going to bite your toes."[brief silence]
[longer silence, I'm thinking he's asleep, then...]
"WHATTTTTTT??"
Oops.

@EvilCartyen how could you not, by that age? but I guess maybe it's a nanny state thing. So much security guaranteed, from cradle to grave.
He kept those legs curled up all night, tho.

@Tarnport Some people are told there ARE no monsters under beds, which in my opinion is both dangerous and irresponsible.
I don't think you should tell him what lurks in the shadows, though. It'll be too much for him.

@Tarnport I am almost never scared, but that's because I - a white heterosexual 100+kg male - am likely the most dangerous thing around.
Worth keeping in mind when others express that they're nervous about something, I think.

@EvilCartyen we are on the same page exactly, of similar demographic - and 105kg. I think I've recounted more than once on here the tale of when my friend went to sensitivity training and they asked the group if they were afraid to sleep in a first floor bedroom with the window open. He brought the question home to me as a test, and just like all the men in the class I had no idea what the problem might be - Was it too hot? Mosquitos?? ALL the women knew. And we need to, too.
