FediGroups is a discussion group system, you can see a group's posts by following its account and post to a group by mentioning it.

When you mention a group, it boosts that post to all the other people following the group.

However, some groups require following them before they will boost your post, so I think that's why the bot was telling you you weren't part of the group?

So it works differently from hashtags, especially across servers, because of how federation works.

The fact that we have to remove the fedigroup from the reply recipients / mentioned people to avoid this is definitely poor UX 8-/
