Writers use it to illustrate their articles

And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.

None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.

they used stock art + Photoshop (or a free photo editor like Gimp or Paint or a cheap Photoshop clone like Affinity)

stock photos & illustrations from Deposit Photos ran me about 38 cents an image so even if I bought multiple images to "photobash" a unique cover then the cost was super low

admittedly i had some training in visual art but this stuff ain't rocket science, it just takes the willingness to experiment & train your eye as to what looks good / commercial in a cover image

I have experimented with it and I've used it to help clean up some code and do mundane tedious tasks for some synths and programs I've made, as a tool- but even at this I feel oddly icky.

I'm glad I experimented with it so I can spot fake stuff easier but I just wish it didn't exist at all honestly.

I don't like where it's all headed.

Fingers crossed all these companies go bust, that's what it's looking like anyway.

If someone has images to sell, even non-exclusively, I'd be happy to look at them. But a track on streaming services is likely to earn under $20, how much would you want? I've looked for years to find collaborators to make short videos. There should be a market for reasonable artwork, but music distribs do not allow credit!

If you have neither money nor energy to create something extra, I guess many tend to fall back on using AI. Personally, I do think that's a reasonable choice, but I wish there were other ways out there to collaborate.

As a writer who hates plagiarism bots, I never even seriously considered using the things for cover art or illustration. I'll go without a cover if I can't afford a real artist (since I have zero design sense so I don't think anything I make will enhance my writing). My websites - such as they are - are handcrafted. I don't even use HTML editors - text editors for the win!

So, yeah, my website is ugly? Well, it's human made. As is my writing.
