Sure, it's prudent to put a bucket under the drip when there's a hole in the roof, but most people don't consider it a permanent solution & would be irate at a landlord who doesn't fix the hole.

Meanwhile, software patches - the buckets of tech - have been the norm for an entire generation, with no end in sight.
