<![CDATA[Another #OpenStreetMap rendering comparison: City of Kiel.]]>Another rendering comparison: City of Kiel.

Here shows a difference in pallette, among other things. And I have included a shot of Shortbread, the style available in the osm.org website.

1. OSM Pastel (my vector style): Farmland is light brown, hospital clear pink, education purple, retail pale pink, commerse (which btw is B2B services and trading) is orange-yellow (or pig), industry yellow.
2. OSM Carto: Farmland is witch-hair-colored (yellow-greenish), hospitals and educations yellow, retail and commercial peach, industy dusty rose. (Less colors, less recognizability).
3. OMT. Colors like Carto.
4. : Education and hospitals are not colored. Industry is dusty purple, retail and commercial pale peachish. But you won't doubt where there are allotments, or what the number of moterways/highways are.

I see many nice things in this shortbread style, even if it has some rough edges!

Right now they are thin lines, although the stations are clearly visible. 🙂

I agree that highways are very dominant - more in Carto than in my style, but still. On the other hand, you can see busstops, cycleways, bikeparking and (foot) paths, pedestrian streets and areas, even they are not loud.

Really would love more osm things that would set a stronger focus on humans and less on cars, so show how walkable/cycleable places are and where public transport is (going)

Shortbread is (also) a vector tile schema, different from OpenMaptiles. Lighter, supposedly equal to less data, but I haven't really looked into it. Fully FOSS <3.

In addition to those, Stamen produces tiles which they claim is compatible with OMT - I haven't tested yet, and Maptiler have their not-open-source schemas, but also provides OMT tiles.

And there is MapToolkit, who also produces tiles and even claims that they can be used freely (unless you use them too much), but their schema isn't FOSS either as far as I understand, although they do have documentation.

Oh, and ofc.

A style can't just be switched to a different schema, unless someone provides a mapping tool that I haven't heard of - and even then, features may differ

... I use OMT scema tiles from , and you can get Shortbread tiles from , for download or just to use. Along with some more very cool stuff actually.
