When I was at North Manchester High most of the lads would leave at 16 and get an apprenticeship in local firms; Ferranti,ICI,Connoly’s etc. But already some of these were starting to poach time-served staff and close the apprenticeship schemes. And this is a domino effect because who’s going to train trades who then leave? Except soon they were complaining they couldn’t get skilled staff.

terrybtwo@ohai.social

Reply to Bite Size Economic No.24 on Tue, 30 Jun 2026 07:28:30 GMT

@ChrisMayLA6 I've seen this in the trades here in the US. It's now to a point where people and businesses which are in the trades complain that "the young folks don't wanna do this", but then you look at their job ads (and ads for other companies doing the same trade) and there's no possible way for a young person or a new person to do it, because they all require at least 2 years experience, sometimes 5, 10, and I've seen 15 a handful of times.

kilroy_was_here@dobbs.town

Reply to Bite Size Economic No.24 on Tue, 30 Jun 2026 07:27:32 GMT

@ChrisMayLA6
Hence the use of poison pills - non transferable pensions that are are not preferred creditors on bankruptcy, etc.

quoidian@mstdn.ca
