When I say tech activism I mean the people who call out stuff like and champion etc. I don't know if those people identify as activists though.

But what I often see on Fedi isn't shared by the wider left. So many on the left are still on fucking Substack or something from Meta. They continue to support tech oligarchs by being an active and popular presence on corporate owned platforms. And we know those platforms don't value the left and will shadowban any account that gets too influential.

I've long tried to bring people over to Fedi. Maybe I haven't tried all that hard, but I personally don't see why it would be difficult to open up an account here and just start posting stuff.

That's the bit I don't get. Most of them don't even bother trying.

Which is why I firmly believe most left wing commentators are ensnared by the same corporate mindset many of us are. It's the mindset that values brand names over smaller, independent products and services

It's true people will flock to a new social media site only when it has been reported in corporate news that the site is growing in popularity.

Fedi is popular, but that rarely gets such a hype from corporate news. Funny that.

Do it laterally – don’t tell people to use decentralized protocols, but do it in a meaningful way and passively show them that you can live a more fulfilling, meaningful life with free software.

The left aren't concerned with how they actively support the corporate hegemony.

As long as they get the readers/viewers and therefore donations and subscriptions, they will only focus on corporate sites.

It's long been clear to me that's a losing battle, and so much left wing discourse is stifled or banned because of corporate or establishment interests.

But the left are always championing people over profit, and independent over corporate, but they don't see social media in that vein. And that is why I don't see much of data privacy and suchlike outside of Fedi.

It's disappointing.
