I answered "belonging" FWIW.  That's the short answer; the long answer is, at this point, self-hosting.  That wasn't even a goal I had, to begin with, when I first created what I'll refer to in this context (incorrectly) as "this" account (which has migrated several times).  "Belonging" is still the most correct answer, though, and it's not much more complicated than that in detail.  Frankly, the reality of the Fediverse is that it allows you/me/whoever-wants-to to run their own instance, whereas other forms of social media—particularly those that are quite literally run for profit by some corporation, so, by far the majority of social media respecting how many people actually use the thing—do not allow for this, and that is by design.  The Fediverse does allow for this, and that is also by design.  "They" don't want their users to be able to operate with any amount of sovreignty to the extent that "they" are able to control that.  They are the proprietor, of course; users' self-sovereignty is abrasive against advertisers and therefore bad for business.  So, to put it even less delicately, I belong here because I don't belong over there—so there you go.

I'm here cuz I'm bored and lazy, but also because it's kinda nice.
