Well, not exactly CGI - I kinda forgot that this movie came out in 1992, even digital compositing was barely a thing yet (James Cameron's "Terminator 2" CGI metal guy came out only the year before)

What this means it those xeno effects are actually puppetry, which is pretty cool. Still doesn't excuse how bad the final film looks, though (in my humble opinion).
