Nora, can you try quoting in the web interface, and try waiting a little bit for the quoted post to appear before posting? (It sometimes takes a while to actually happen.)

this thing where just a link gives a post preview works in lots of other clients and softwares, it sounds like mastodon specifically did something different, and maybe a quote reply is something they didnt bother to accomodate

I know some posts won't be quoted, depending on the server or the poster's settings. IDK if it's that or some other issue.

  2. when not in tweetdeck mode, press back
  3. click repost button on post you wanna quote
  4. select quote
  5. you should have a quote post now

there is also the trick to copy the link to the post you want to quote, and pasting that into the compose box ShouldTM suggest quoting this post

I believe you just paste the URL for the post in your reply. If quoting is allowed on that post it should become a quote. 😎
