Even on other platforms they still matter. I like to think that the entire architecture behind the fediverse ultimately is set for the users / potential users and also that social media, as a whole, reflects the real world, where we have to learn to collaborate, tolerate and understand everyone. I know the topic is more nuanced and complex, but in a nutshell it sounds like that, at least to aspire to.
