These giants are nothing without an audience generating usage statistics that stimulate investment, not to mention license fees for the non-free tiers, and training data otherwise (as with OpenAI's 'free' offerings, but probably all of them in reality).

I have a theory that maybe the AI frontier labs want to slow down because its actually impossible for them to go any faster.

They might have hit a limit, either in the performance of the model or in their costs. And to save face, they can just say they are "intentionally" slowing down instead of admitting that they are getting diminishing returns on their investments.
