My wife made an excellent observation yesterday:

"The poor Trump voters are just as selfish and unwilling to positively contribute to a better world as the billionaires they are supporting. The only difference is they don't have tons of money. But if someone gave them riches, they'd make all the same choices."

I think she's 100% right. We have to admit that a subset of our country wants everything for themselves and they don't care what happens to everyone else. That's our core problem.

This is maybe also one of the problems with "working class consciousness": It is certainly _not_ monolithic.
Being exploited in/by a class system, doesn't compel rebellion in people against selfsame system; many oppressed are either pro system and vie for a better status within the system or they are against the system, but don't believe it can ever change so end up assimilating into the system anyways.
