If you see a post you want to share but you want to add a Content Warning (CW), it is now very easy to do this:
1. Go to the post you want to share
2. Quote the post (on the web interface click
Boost and then "Quote")
3. Add a CW to your own post, the one that appears above the post being quoted. This will hide everything in your post including the quoted post.This used to be impossible, but since Mastodon added quoting it also allows adding CWs to posts you want to share.
@FediTips
So am I really the only person to quote this so far, or are they not visible because you haven't approved and quotes yet? -
@j_j
Well I just tried to quote both you and @Anomnomnomaly and it didn't work either time, so I'd say both sides need it enabled. -

I have mixed feelings about quote toots but they are here now, for some, so I guess it is what it is
Do you know when the various apps will start offering them?
-
Quoting can only happen if the author of the post has given permission to be quoted for that specific post.
Each post has its own quoting permission setting.

It's entirely in the hands of the app developers, you would have to ask them!

So am I really the only person to quote this so far, or are they not visible because you haven't approved and quotes yet?Three people have quoted it so far, you can see on the "original page" for the post (more info at https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/ ).

@FediTips
Yeah I can see it too. Which means that after 100 boosts, I was the first quote. For a post about quoting, you'd think there'd be more. Have the updates just not rolled out to most servers still? I've been quote posting for months now. -

@FediTips I would guess the same applies to alt text for images.
