Also, companies want to collect the same data on kids ASAP. There's no material benefit to banning kids as far as they're concerned. Hence why some companies may opt to eat fines rather than change their business model.

But banning kids from social media is a lazy and counterproductive approach to solving the real problem, which is better addressed through robust privacy laws and more third spaces for kids to safely spend time in.

Yeah they fully support these laws because flagging certain people requires persistent metadata about those people - how else will they know they're inappropriate - and using that to map more linked meta data they can then sell. Legal license to require more information that's consistent and builds better profiles for advertisement? Absolutely!

It doesn't matter if the kids lie as long as the links are consistent. So that's their entire motive.
