Long time no see Fediversers what did I miss?
-
Several months ago I finally deleted reddit but i havent check on any new developments over at Lemmy/Piefed or any of the million instances so I’m wondering: what’s been going on recently? Anything that I missed? Is it still worth my time to engage with these communities? Lmk the history. Last time i checked, Piefed split from lemmy because of the drama between the developers iirc? But what else has been happening?
I don’t think that’s accurate. PieFed is a different server software, written in a different programming language and using a different tech stack, … but they both serve the same network. There wasn’t ever any splitting or noteworthy fight between the devs that I’m aware of?!
I suppose Lemmy devs will be working on the 1.0 version. PieFed keeps rocking and gets new features all the time. Latest thing: we can subscribe to Mastodon accounts.
And if you’ve been absent for a while, there will probably be a few new instances and communities.
Also: Welcome back!

Man, can’t believe it was 6 months between 1.6 and 1.7. There were 23 releases in the 1.6.x line…

Piefed split from lemmy
there was no split, they were never the same project, and they interop with each other well
PieFed now allows you to follow users instead of just communities, so you can follow Mastodon users

Tesseract (the lemmy front end) no longer exists.
The dev snuck in his own personalised block list, hiding thousands of people, communities, and instances that he personally didn’t like, as well as hiding any comment that contained certain words/phrases. It was a huge json file of blocked items.
When called out for this, he had a massive crashout, shut down his own instance (the one place he was free to block whatever he wanted), and turned it into a ddos tool that causes anyone that visits his ‘fuck you I’m leaving’ message to send thousands of requests to another instance. (DBzer0 iirc)

Other than some dramas here and there, it’s more or less the same. Engagement feels higher though.

Also PieFed now has experimental microblogging integration, probably linked by Rimu in one of the other comments (didn’t get the chance to check either yet). But from my experience with Mbin, microblogging + RSS Parrot + Bridgy Fed makes so the struggle becomes following just what you can consume.

Why does it almost feel like instances were a mistake

Ooh what are the new instances that are popular?

Ooh what are the new instances that are popular?
What I remember is Grail setting up an instance about half a year ago on multiverse.soulism.net
We also got fedinsfw.app replace the old defunct porn place…
We had a few other instances pop up like nord.pub or retrofed.com …seems some online forums and local communities launched some Lemmy instances for their neighborhood… and maybe a tad bit more content in languages I don’t speak. But overall, I think the Threadiverse settled down a bit… We don’t get a lot of new AND popular instances. Neither did we grow in active users during the past year. There’s a list on fediverse Observer for Lemmy and PieFed you can sort by age in months.

the whole point is you can choose a difference instance. with something like reddit, all you get is reddit or nothing.
