PieFed user surge continues! š
-
I just signed up for lemmy (brand new here). Can someone help explain piefed? I looked it up and it seems it used the same protocalls? I downloaded voyager app to use Lemmy - do I need to do something else to use piefed? Iām sort of confused, because a cursory search sounds like piefed works on voyager as well. . . If Iām already on Lemmy, am I basically also on piefed, just a different instance?
Sorry, hopefully someone who is smarter can eli5?
Same protocol, yes, so they share all the same content. And a lot of apps originally built for Lemmy now work with PieFed too. Voyager is one of them so if you have an account on a PieFed server/instance you can just add that to Voyager.
When using a mobile app thereās not much difference for the average person. But PieFed instances have a lot of mod and admin tools which will tend to improve the quality of the content and people you come across, if thatās how the server admins want to make it. https://join.piefed.social/features

Piefed is also a part of the Fediverse, and reads Lemmy instances. Lemmy.zip also has a Piefed server at http://piefed.zip.
So essentially itās just another instance? Do I need to create an account on a piefed instance to get the benefits of piefed vs Lemmy (which Iām not sure what I would actually get different).

Ah, ok. This clears it up a bit. So itās moreso about the communities that are hosted on a piefed instance - as they have better moderation tools.
Thanks!

Yes, you would
Currently Piefed has tools lemmy doesnāt: emote reactions, flairs, hashtags, polls, events, scheduled posts, feeds

A day later and itās still going up at the same rate!
Itās actually going up even faster!!

So we donāt see posts from piefed in here?

No, you do. You are commenting on a piefed post to a piefed user.
You just donāt get all the extra bits I mentioned

If by ādirect trafficā you mean to send them there, then Iād say we donāt need that, and shouldnāt want it. The whole reason federation works is because control is spread out. Giving one, or a few, instances control of most of the content and users is a horrible idea and begging for issues. Speaking of, if youāre on lemmy.world, you should consider spreading elsewhere. At least donāt send new people there.
A small instance isnāt going to grow past PieFed.social in 1 day, let alone an actually big instance like Lemmy.world. If an instance grows too big then we just stop suggesting it and pick a new instance to suggest.

People still direct people to Lemmy.world. A lot of people donāt understand the benefits of federation still and want everyone on one instance. They wonāt stop when an instance gets too large.

I donāt know. I wouldnāt be so sure. Itās a good idea to spread the message anywhere.

Oh no⦠Some of that might be bots.

Ah ok. I can live with that

Honest question here. Since itās all the same stuff⦠why do I as a fediverse user care about piefed if itās basically an admin toolbox?
Itās cool admins have good tools to minimize workload., but beyond that?

Yep. You can export your settings from Lemmy and import then into your PieFed account, so all your community memberships and blocks will be replicated.
