Can anyone tell me why I can't get my profile image to display?

It's the same one I used previously on another Mastodon account, where it showed correctly. It displays correctly during the cropping stage, but turns into grey goo once on my profile. I've tried other images and exporting the jpeg to png but always I get this mess!
