They did their part, they took a leap of faith.
But what are we doing today to ensure Europe will be around and thriving in the next 69 years?
Which leaps of faith are we now taking to meet the mounting challenges?
I put it to you that we still live off the surplus that these early visionaries have created, rather than creating our own.
And time is running out.
I have been running a wiki for more than a decade for people to use as they see fit. Its no longer possible because for each person visiting you have ten thousand bots scrapping indiscriminately. Effectively I must pay for a server for the "AI" bros to build LLMs to serve the same information in chatbot format (and collect payment 
)
The wiki is now behind a login. But even that will not survive. LLM's impersonating real people (e.g by filling forms) is getting easier by the day.
@madeindex "AI" already damaged the open internet because to produce slop you first need to pilfer every accessible pool of information, and that brings down servers
But there is no point crying, in a sense some of this disruption was inevitable, it's a tipping point created by all of us making a lot of good digital information, code, art etc. available.
It's been exploited by bad actors but we need to really think what good actors would do. Screaming "fire" is at best the first step.

Umm, not so sure about that part.
The fediverse is full of "rage", some of it reflecting what is happening in the world but a lot of it performative, I suspect simply nudged on by the *implicit* algorithm of posting, boosting, see and be seen etc. To the point that mastodon had to introduce the "think before you comment" UI.
But it is indeed from this base that we need to think forward towards more meaningful social media.
this is not so much a problem of energy per-se but rather that society has mutated to have ever more consumption as the only source of satisfaction, the only raison-d-etre.
The problem is that it simply doesnt work. People don't get happy with insatiable consumption. The highest consuming society (the US) is tearing itself apart rather than enjoy the privilege
In the end the path to sustainability must solve this deeper and more difficult problem
