@cstross Judging by the other titles in the "Hill I will die on" category, they're intentionally provoking their readers with random opinions telling other people how to live.

@oddhack @cstross "weird hill to die on but at least you're dead" sums up this column very neatly.

      @oddhack @cstross
He can go up that hill and die, as loud as he likes. I'll have my noise cancelling headphones on, chilling to Zero 7, so I won't notice.

The street I live on is treeless and lined on both sides with 4-story stone buildings, and buses, ambulances, cars, and trucks use it nose-to-tail. Ambient noise can hit 90dB at pavement level: noise-cancelling earbuds are a survival tool.

Not to mention that folks on the spectrum are prone to noise pollution induced meltdowns.

TLDR: this guy is a pompous prescriptive ass who needs to be fucked in one ear with bagpipes and in the other with a road drill.

@cstross previously this was obviously the guy who is upset someone is reading a newspaper on the train instead of paying attention to them.

@cstross Noise cancelling headphones have their place. Absolutely.
Not everywhere. If you, say, order a coffee from the nice person behind the counter you really should remove them. Basic politeness.
Other than "human interaction needed" or "canceling out traffic noise and blocking the full path by rollerskating left/right/left/right oblivious to everything" I see no problem. Still, I find it a pity if you don't hear the birds, the wind in the leaves in the forest... but that's your problem.

@drchaos The only audible birds where I live are the fucking seagulls, demanding your food with menaces. The nearest green space is half a kilometer away across two traffic-bearing roads. (There are crossing places: not the point, though.)

@cstross (yeah, totally got that from your post, and I agree, the asthmatic coughing of traffic fume poisoned seagulls is not what I had in mind when I mentioned birds singing).

@cstross given his opinion and view of “managers” shows just of our touch he really is. Any manager tha needs to “drop by” and doesn’t get what the headphones means is not a good manager anyway! Or maybe it is me I’ve not had a local (as in continent and at least 5hrs TZ difference) manager in more than 21 years 😃

@cstross Also, when I’m walking around outside with AirPods on, they are typically in passthrough mode anyway. I could still hear this guy, even if I really don’t want to.

@cstross when did the Guardian start printing LinkedIn style management slop.

@AmazingMeagen It's transparently clickbait, and ridiculously effective—to an extremely annoying degree!

Haha, thanks for sacrificing your peace of mind for our sakes.

One place where I deeply disapprove of noise cancelling earphones is on a bike. I've seen too many near misses...

@cstross my thoughts exactly when I saw this. I did think this whole series was an example of 'random person chooses to constrain other people's choices'.

@cstross @grayabbott The dude (Stephan Stern) completely misses the point. The ear buds are the symptom, not the problem.

Get rid of open-plan offices, allow work from home when possible, and impose strict noise and emissions limits on vehicles - including stereo systems. More public transportation/less traffic. More parks.
