“We are in an active genocide, but the difference is that our people aren't dying in camps. We aren't being exterminated while huddled together, but in isolation: in the streets, at home, and in hospital beds. Why build costly gas chambers that might attract attention when there's a virus on the loose that will do the job for you? Viruses don't have a face or a voice or a will. But we have seen that fascism can bend the course of a pandemic to its own will, to meet its own ends, and veil the death wrought in its own name behind the veil of a plague. Be prepared should they turn to the veil of war next.
The only antidote to isolation is community. Remember, we cannot do this alone and, contrary to what many of us have been taught, we all deserve to be here. Our value as human beings is intrinsic to our existence. We do not have to "earn" the right to live and be at peace, any more than a sparrow does. In the words of Marx, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."
We are legion. We are diverse. We are resourceful. We will prevail.Signed,
A Fellow Weaver

@YakyuNightOwl no it’s not. these local organizations are underfunded and severely ration their services. we do not waste our precious and dwindling resources on nonprofit organizations that exist to sustain the need for their organization’s existence.
if these orgs are really interested in contributing, then they will work with us - not the other way around.
we give them what we have so they can turn their backs on our neighbors and cry “but we’re underfunded” - and we are left with nothing to defend them with ourselves. there is never enough funding for these bottomless money pits, and they will ALWAYS choose to give in to the demands of their philanthropic donors. never ours, despite any individual’s “good intentions.”

I know Veterans for Peace and Military Families Speak Out are active in southern California rn. I was on a training call of people working against recruitment that was nationwide. This was probably 6 months ago.

@vervain
and then whatdid it lead to action? did it build a community? a network of any kind?
a training call 6 months ago does nothing if it doesn’t lead to coordinated action
that is why i (a veteran) do not work with VFP. they are a resource pit.
this is not to say that the training call is useless. but VFP is notorious for wasting resources on marketing campaigns disguised as activism. your training call has to lead to a coordinated effort, a community network that shares skills and resources to challenge the status quo, otherwise it is marketing and nothing more. they do those training calls so people will give them more money and prestige without posing a legit thread to the status quo.

what could we do with $743,000? VFP isn’t really doing much with this obscene amount of money.
nonprofits use these funds to perpetuate themselves. they cannot make meaningful progress without risking loss of their funding sources.
how much does it really cost to organize counter-recruitment efforts that really only need solid community networks to function?
counter-recruitment needs community solidarity in order to be effective and that is basically free. it also requires building networks for resisting social atomization, alienation, poverty, exclusion - any counter recruitment effort must take action to meet the needs intentionally left unmet by capitalism so as to make enlistment attractive. people enlist because they lack opportunity, belonging, purpose, hope for the future. what could we do with $743,000 that VFP has failed to accomplish for decades?
