    To block illegal bottom trawlers, Cambodia is building concrete towers.

    It’s very clever: three-tonne underwater concrete towers disable trawl nets while creating shelter and nursery space for fish. An NGO has now deployed 1,250 of these ‘Fishery Productivity Structures’ across its southern coast, protecting more than 200 km² of habitat. Early monitoring found fish abundance six times higher at protected sites than control areas.

    @digyoursoul

    This is so simple, it's almost laughable.
    What a brilliant idea.

              @digyoursoul It also is a great barrier against political meddeling. We know how environmental laws constantly are scrapped by conservative or right-wing governments. A law simply banning bottom trawlers can be changed. Removing all those towers from the water is a lot harder

                      @digyoursoul

                      I used to fish off the NJ coast. It was a blue collar and up activity, and on the weekends you could practically hopscotch across the bay there were so many little boats out with a couple people fishing. I ate fresh-frozen fish for free all winter as a kid. The bottom trawlers broke the ecosystem around 1990, and all the fishing boats disappeared. The bay is now the plaything of useless speedboats and giant yachts, and to my knowledge there still aren't any fish. Bottom trawling kills everything.

                        @stepheneb @digyoursoul I was imagining that pineapple-shaped towers would do a really good job of snagging nets across the beleaguered territories of the orange roughy.
